trekking mount agung with mr Brian

Kketut picked me up from my homestay in sidemen at 05.00am. I wasn't interested in trekking at night, and wanted the advantage of a good sleep, before the climb, but had been unable to find a guide prepared to be flexible about the starting time.In 45 minutes we were at the pura pasar agung car park and ready to go.After paying the peak fee to the attendants,we start off up the concrete steps to the temple (over 200!),and had a short break while ketut carried out his Hindu devotions and prayed for a safe trip (noeruption!),then it was off up the dirt track in the forest, using head torches as dawn was still a little way off.Being dry season, the track was in good condition and not at all slippery.Soon we were able to put our lights away, and it was pleasant being able to see the forest and other features and monkeys. After a while the forest gave way to scrub and grasses and then up through rocky terrain. There were more monkeys on the rocks and at the summit. The track was in good condition throughout some easy scrambling requiring use of hands, the sun peeped over the mountain top just as we were nearingthe summit what a gorgeous day!.we had great views all round mt. Rinjani on lombok, the sea,the mountains to the west, the clouds below and of course the inpressive crater. After prayers and offerings,Ketut provided hot Bali coffee grown by his family and never tasted so good!,it was most relaxing up there, cool, peaceful and serene. We had the summit to ourselves,as other parties were already on their way down.At 09.00am we started our descent,Ketut hard a large rubbish bag and collected 40 litres of foil and plastic on the way down.I didn't see any other guide doing this but i hope the idea catches on. I was impressed with ketutbawa's attitude to the environment, and his fitness strength and agility.I fell i was in very safe hands. He was also a lot of fun to be with, and full of humour, everage times for the climb are 3 to 5 hours up and 2 to 4 down although we were quicker.Cheers,Brian (New zealand)

Wonderful trek!

Had a wonderful trek up Mt Agung with Ketut! A very nice guide, very thoughtful and pleasant to be with. Up on the top of Mt Agung, after a long tiring trek, Ketut surprised me with some hot coffee served on a silver plate...a moment to remember!I passed Ketut's office a few days later and got to meet his wonderful family and his little daughter guided me up the temple near by.Ketut was also my driver back to Sanur and during our drive Ketut told me all sorts of stories about Bali and its culture.A reliable, wonderful guide in Bali I warmly recommend!
